Camping season is upon us, and May long weekend is in just a few days! One question we get asked often by our raw feeding customers is, “What do we feed the dog when we take him camping?”. Many folks are quick to grab a bag of dry food (a.k.a. “kibble”) but there are a lot of other less processed options that you may not be aware of!
Freeze-dried diets are the next best thing to raw as no heat has been applied to them and their vitamins, minerals and nutrients stay intact. These diets have a high meat inclusion and are typically grain-free. We surveyed our staff and here are our top 3 freeze-dried camping foods for dogs!
In the number one spot – and by a long shot we might add – is the K9 Natural freeze-dried diets. WHY do we love them so much? Number one is palatability. This food is so yummy, that many of us use it for training treats! Most dogs think they’ve hit the jackpot with this one!
It’s easy. The food doesn’t re-hydrate, but adding water is recommended because a dog’s diet should contain moisture. This makes camping with this food easy – no can openers, or coolers required. It’s lightweight and quick to feed. You can even take a handful hiking to feed dry as a snack and an energy boost.
We stock all of their available varieties: Beef, Chicken, Venison and Lamb. Even if you aren’t a camper, this food is great to have on hand incase you forget to thaw the dog’s dinner!
In second place we have the Sojos Complete line up. This food does require re-hydration, so you’ll have to plan a few minutes ahead to feed it. Sojos is also freeze-dried which means that no heat or chemicals are applied to the food.
Dogs love this food, and it’s got a pretty palatable price point! (Sojos claims it costs about as much to feed as a premium dry food.) The only real complaint we’ve seen with the food is that some dogs poop out the veggies intact, and some with sensitive stomachs have bit of a harder time digesting it. The meat inclusion in the Sojos Complete is not as high as the K9 Naturals, but the price point reflects that.
It is available in a number of flavours including: Goat, Lamb, Beef and Turkey.
Primal nuggets win for variety! Holy smokes they have the following options: Beef, Chicken, Duck, Lamb, Pork, Venison and Turkey/Sardine. There is definitely something for everyone.
To feed, you breakup the nuggets into smaller pieces and add water. Wait a few minutes and serve. Even though you need to break the nuggets up to serve, they are very convenient to portion out. No measuring cup required!
